This September 2011 meeting of parliamentarians in Phnom Penh, parallel to the meeting of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), was convened on the theme of ‘Ensuring Social Protection for Migrant Workers.’ Discussions addressed social protection schemes for migrants and their families in light of the many insecurities, anxieties, and uncertainties that migrants and their families currently face, and will continue to face in the future.
It was at this gathering that the Asian Inter-Parliamentary Caucus on Labour Migration was formalized by a resolution of the assembled MPs. The caucus will encourage a pro-active role for parliamentarians with respect to the rights and welfare of migrant workers across Asia.
